Jolly Folly

It was a crowded flight. Most of the flights I have been on these days have been, I guess, but this one seemed exceptionally so. I think the jolly in the air squeezed out extra space. We were on our way to Las Vegas ... a desert place ... in many ways. Most were going there to play. We were going for business.

Singing, shouting, happy chatter filled the air. New friendships were blossoming by the second.

Everyone was happy to be on the way to ... Sin City.

Scotty and I were not fitting in well. We are happy enough, but we don't like to go to Las Vegas. Call it strange, but we don't go unless we have to. We were on our way for business reasons.

We have arrived and we can hardly wait to go home. Is it possible to wear blinders and walk through the crowded places of the hotel? No. So we do our best to avoid seeing too much!

I am shocked by the absence of shame or embarrassment.

I am not okay with this. Scrooge? Perhaps. But what I see here is wrong. And very sad. I think someone needs to say so.

I am wondering what the trip home will be like. Will everyone be so happy? Or will many sit silent, heavy with regret?

I wonder ... what if there was more jolly in our Christian pilgrimage? Would more be excited about joining the journey? What if we had more excitement about our eternal destination? What if more of us were so happy about Who we were going to see that we couldn't talk about anything else? Would more people want to be "on the plane" on the way to heaven with us?

These thoughts have truly stirred me up.

What do you think?

I think some more jolly along the Christian path would prevent some from falling prey to folly on more destructive paths.

How is your jolly today?

  1. So sad that Jesus isn't more attractive and visible in our lives. Christians should be the happiest people around, for their joy isn't based on circumstances, but on a Savior.

    Thanks for this reminder Cheri,
    Joy
